🧙♀️ How Halloween Began: A Little History
Halloween dates back over 2,000 years to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced “sow-in”). The Celts celebrated their new year on November 1st, marking the end of harvest and the beginning of winter. They believed that on the night before — October 31st — the boundary between the living and the spirit world became thin, allowing friendly (and not-so-friendly) spirits to visit.
To ward off any mischief, people lit bonfires and wore costumes to disguise themselves from wandering ghosts — and just like that, the roots of Halloween were planted!
Centuries later, Christian traditions merged with Samhain, creating All Hallows’ Eve, which eventually became the Halloween we know and love today — filled with jack-o’-lanterns, costumes, and sweet treats.
🎃 Fun Halloween Facts
Pumpkins weren’t always the stars of Halloween! Early jack-o’-lanterns were actually carved from turnips and potatoes.
The world’s largest pumpkin weighed over 2,700 pounds — now that’s a lot of pie!
Candy corn was originally called “Chicken Feed” when it was invented in the 1880s.
In Ireland, Halloween is still celebrated with bonfires, games, and traditional foods like barmbrack (a sweet fruit bread that hides a surprise charm inside).
🤰 Spooky Fun for Expecting Moms
